An adult, guardian or caregiver (18+) is required to accompany each child in the water and participate in every class. The adult participants learn too! Adults learn how to safely handle the infant or toddler in, on, and around the water, as well as how to become water-smart.

For each level of Waterbabies, our instructors follow a plan to introduce new swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate and engaging for infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. Familiar routines are extremely important to this age group. Each class uses toys, songs, fun, and games to keep the children engaged and enjoying the water experience, all the while teaching them basic aquatic skills. It is important to understand that waterbabies classes are not designed to teach children to become proficient swimmers or to survive in water on their own. 

Waterbabies introduce the parent/guardian and the child to basic skills. As parent/guardian, you learn how to safely work with your child in the water, including how to appropriately support and hold your child in the water and how to prepare and encourage your child to participate fully and try skills. In addition, you are introduced to several water safety topics; each child receives an introduction to basic skills that lay a foundation for learning to swim.

Parents/guardians, you also learn:




  • How to properly supervise children and maintain safe behavior in, on, and around the water.


  • How to hold and support your child in the water.


  • Valuable water safety information to make your family safer in, on, and around the water.





Additional Information:




  • Classes meet 3x per week for 2 weeks.


  • The cost per session covers one child and one parent to accompany them in the water.


  • At least one parent must be in the water with their child during the lesson.


  • Disposable swim diapers with a bathing suit over is required.


  • Additional children accompanying families to the pool must have an adult 18+ supervising them.  Children may not be left unattended on deck or while a parent is in the water.






Fees per session: Somerville residents $55, Non-Somerville residents $70
