Hiking 101 is a free, pilot four-week program offered by Somerville Parks and Recreation in partnership with Health and Human Services for teens in grades 7–12.
The program meets on Wednesdays from 2:30–4:00 pm, April 29–May 20, at 167 Holland Street, Room 203 M.
Each week will focus on a different hiking-related topic through a mix of short info sessions, outdoor time, and hands-on activities. Topics include teamwork and leadership, outdoor skills and safety, map and compass reading, mindfulness in nature, and the physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors.
We will not be hiking every week. This program is not strenuous or physically demanding, outside of a typical walk. This program is designed as an introduction to hiking where teens can learn, build community, be active, and gain confidence in a supportive environment.
During the final week, participants will put their skills into action on a group hiking field trip to the Middlesex Fells on May 20, with bus transportation provided from 167 Holland Street (2:30–4:30 pm). A rain date is scheduled for May 27. Snacks will be provided each week.
