Hiking 101 is a free, one-day field trip for teens in grades 7–12, offered by Somerville Parks and Recreation in partnership with Health and Human Services.

Join us on Wednesday, May 20 (rain date: May 27) for a trip to the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

This is a chance to get outside, hang with other teens, and try something new—no experience needed. The hike will be beginner-friendly (more like a walk than a workout), so whether you’ve never hiked before or just want to be outside with friends, this is for you.

Along the way, we’ll mix in some fun, low-key activities like team challenges, learning basic outdoor skills, and taking time to relax and unplug in nature. It’s all about getting fresh air, moving your body, and enjoying the day.

Transportation: Bus transportation will be provided and required to take to and from the trip (final pick-up location will be shared ahead of time).
Tentatively, bus pick-up and drop-off will be at 167 Holland St, Somerville, MA. However, we are currently reviewing where registered teens are coming from after school to determine the most central and accessible location.

The bus will leave at 2:30 PM and return to the drop-off location between 4:00–4:30 PM. Final transportation details will be shared a week or two before the trip.

Bonus: We’ll end the day with pizza
