If you need a fee waiver email jvallesio@somervillema.govSomerville Parks and Recreation and Somerville High School Athletics are teaming up once again to host the 3rd Annual celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day on Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day – no school)!
This exciting drop-off program invites youth participants in Kindergarten through 8th grade to spend the day learning, playing, and connecting through sports led by Somerville High School athletes. In its first year, this pilot event welcomed 90 youth participants. In year two, the event continued to grow with 110 participants, and this year we are excited to expand even further with 8 sports stations and grade-based groups to create an even more engaging experience for participants.
This event works to increase opportunities in sports while building confidence, leadership, and community connections across age groups in Somerville with the intention of increasing sign ups across a variety of athletic opportunities in Somerville!
Participants will rotate through 7 different sports stations, including lacrosse, soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, volleyball, and softball. Each station will be led by Somerville High School athletes, creating a fun and welcoming environment for younger participants to learn new skills, build confidence, and try different sports.
Participants will be grouped by grade level: Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and combined 6–8th grade group. The event runs from 10:00 AM–2:00 PM and is drop-off only.
Breakfast snacks and pizza lunch will be provided. Participants should bring a water bottle, sneakers, an additional snack if desired for our newly added snack break, and weather-appropriate clothing, as portions of the event will take place outdoors. All registered participants will receive an event t-shirt.
After the program, all participants and families are invited to visit our community tables. These tables are designed to help families learn more about local sports opportunities and provide information on how to sign up for the sports their child enjoyed most throughout the day.
Exciting news:
New location: We are so excited to share that the event will be hosted at Somerville High School this year!
Extended time: in the past, this event has been 3 years. To extend the amount of time trying each sport, we have made this years event 4 hours! With the extension, we will continue to offer free breakfast snacks at check in and pizza for lunch, however we are welcoming participants to bring an extra snack that they can eat during our new "snack break"
The cost is $25 per resident, $75 for non residents, and scholarship forms are available for families who may need financial assistance.
